Cattail Katanakake or Tachikake (Sword Stand)

Award Winner

Not for Sale

* This one of a kind piece is a bit of a hybrid, as it holds a sword in vertical Tachi fashion but also has a horizontal holder for a wakisashi or tanto.

I found this piece of cottonwood in a debris pile after a desert flood. It hung around the house for several years until a forging class assignment inspired a use for it.

The sword stand is forged from 20’ of 3/8” steel rod, ½” copper pipe, driftwood and scraps of silverware cloth.

The rod was hand-forged to a taper, scored and bent.

Copper pipe was necked down to form the flowers.

The reeds were then welded to a steel plate and bracket secured to the underside of the driftwood section.

The wood base is 22” long, and the cattails are 36” tall.

* Accepted for display into the Pima Community College Annual juried Student Art Exhibition 2010.
