Several years ago , I was asked if I could create a dolphin-themed tomahawk, as a gift for the client’s girlfriend. This was a bit unusual, so before I agreed to the commission, I hammered out the rough shape, just to be sure it was feasible. I then agreed to do it, but never heard back from the client again.

While cleaning out the shop one day, I found the rough forging and figured I should finish it or toss it, and decided to complete it.

The tomahawk is diminutive, forged from a small ball pein hammer, hammered and filed into the shape of a dolphin. The smiling features are chiseled into the face, and inlayed copper forms the eyes. The dorsal fin/eye cap is also formed in steel. The tail forms the hardened, tempered and sharpened blade. The steel parts were then polished and blued.

The handle is hand-carved from Bocote (an exotic wood native to Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies), with two cast-in-place pewter bands and a pewter end cap. The grip was the cross-hatched, and small brass tacks were applied to the center of each diamond. The wood was then oiled and rubbed.

The blade is 6’’ long with a 2.5” edge, and the handle is 12’’ long.
