A client requested a Naval Artillery Powder Horn. These were used by cannoneers (land and sea) to prime the cannon touchholes during battle, as it was faster to set off than fuses. The naval versions were usually fitted with brass spout assemblies and solid (not formed wire) strap eyes. They usually had flat, wide base plugs with a big finial that unscrewed to load powder into the horn from the rear.

There used to be a sandcast spout, lever cap and spring kit available. I used one in 2007, but they don't appear to be around anymore, so I had to make it from scratch. Brass bar stock was hand-ground on the belt grinder. The cone was hand formed from 20ga sheet brass and the seam fully soldered. The strap rings were formed from solid brass, as were the originals. The British Broad Arrow proof mark is engraved in the horn near the spout. The ring grooves were hand filed and the spring is tool steel, secured with brass screws.

Technically, one of the most difficult horns I have done. Now that the practice piece is done, I will start on the client's.

The horn is 18" long overall and 3" in diameter at the base. The finial is 2.5" long.
