St. Louis Inlaid Bison Powder Horn

Sold: $350

This beautiful powder horn is in the St. Louis style of the Fur Trade Era.

The body is carved from American bison horn. The spout is long with two "wedding rings" carved around the strap groove, and inlaid with three rows of tiny pegs. The center section is raised with ten rounded crenelations and inlaid pegd. The horn is scraped smooth and polished, with ten wood pegs used to secure the base plug. A total of over 170 various-sized tapered wood pegs are set into the horn surface and base plug.

The base plug is pine, flat, and overlaid with alternating triangular panels of walnut and maple. Each piece is pierced with three wood pegs of contrasting color. The strap finial is turned from oak and sits on an inlaid maple base. The spout plug is turned from oak as well, and secured with a braided cord strap.

This powder horn can be carried on either side.

The powder horn is 11.5’’ long along the back curve, and the base is 3.25’’ in diameter. Total length is 14".
